1. Always Give Your House an Occupied Appearance: If your house looks occupied while you are away on business or pleasure, would-be burglars will assume that someone is home and will move onto the next house. Most professional burglars are in the business of getting in and out, they don’t want a confrontation, so give the impression that someone is always home with interior/exterior lighting. Keep the place illuminated. Keep the radio and television on a timer to go on and off at various times of the day!

2. Don’t Run Electrical Cords Through Windows during Christmas: About 81% of burglaries occur through the first floor. Remember a thief is looking for the path of least resistance. A window slightly ajar with an electrical cord is often a burglar’s point of entrance in to your home.

3. Don’t Rely On Friends, Neighbors Or Family To Manage Emergencies That May Arise At Your House: Responding to a home emergency at all hours of the day is not only burdensome, it is also a monumental responsibility. We share the story of how many of our clients come to us after the fact. They thought that they could rely on a neighbor, friend or relative and when an emergency occurred, they were unresponsive or did not know how to take appropriate corrective action. At Select Key Holder's® Home Surveillance, we are experienced in responding 24/7 in virtually every conceivable emergency from an alarm call to a gas leak to a broken pipe. We work with local law enforcement and are on call. While these occurrences are sometimes uncontrollable, at Select Key Holder's® we take preventative measures to avoid disasters like these. So, ask yourself, are your neighbors, friends, or relatives capable of responding in an emergency.

4. Insurance Coverage On Your Empty Home. Are You Truly Covered? Most homeowner insurance policies carry a stipulation stating that insurance coverage is subject to being void if your house is left unoccupied for a given period of time. Also, insurance premiums on vacant properties can be significantly higher than on occupied homes. Other factors, such as reduced coverage or cancellation due to vacancy can be averted by having a key holder service perform routine surveillance.

5. How to Make the House Look Occupied: Put lights on multi-functional timers, altering light pattern. Rotate blinds and curtains. Leave a radio on loud, Move the vehicles around Contact the Post Office and Paper Delivery & put a hold on the mail and newspaper. During the winter, have the driveway & walk way shoveled. Don’t leave a message on your answering machine indicating that you are away.

6. Security System Working? A recent study showed that 41% of alarmed homes in Connecticut that were burglarized, the security system was not working. Have your security system calibrated three-times per year, including contact on windows, doors, and sensors. Run a test on your system once a week.

7. Don’t Leave Apparatus Near the House: Keep ladders, tools and any apparatus that could give a would-be thief help into your home locked in the garage of your house, not outside. Remember, thieves can be creative.

8. Don’t Leave Keys In Hiding Spots: Burglars know where to look for keys in popular hiding spots.

9. Don’t Give Burglars Easy Access: Make sure all trees and shrubs are trimmed near all doors and windows where intruders might hide.

10. Secure the house: Install dead bolt locks, window locks, bars placed into the tracks of sliding doors.

Other Tips

11. Prevent Disaster: Turn gas off, flush toilets, run water to avoid pipes freezing, monitor climate/heat.
